Located in the Andaman Sea at the west coast of Thailand, Phuket offers
excellent beaches, good accomodation for all budgets, good restaurants,
and for those who dont't want to just relax a lot of night life. Diving
around Phuket is excellent, you find dive sites for any level of diving
with rich marine life. See our dive site descriptions for more
information. Besides, you can do Elephant Riding, enjoy day trips to
the Phi Phi Islands or the Phang-Nga Bay with it's beautiful limestone
pinnacles.
Many european airlines run direct flights to Phuket International
Airport, and even if you are flying via Bangkok or Singapore, Phuket is
just another 1,5 hours away.
Accommodation
Places getting repeatedly good reports include:
Kata Delight
(From 1100 Baht) This is one of the very few resorts on Phuket that are actually 'steps
away' from the water. The rooms are spacious and clean. They have an
'infinity pool'.
Marina Phuket Resort
(From 120 USD) Beatifully located in a lush tropical garden you can choose between
different kinds of bungalows and villas, garden views, jungle views or
beach views included. Take a few steps down and you are right on Karon
Beach. If you prefer to hang out at the pool you will find one of the
nicest tropical settings on the whole island here.
Kata Beach Resort
(From 115 USD) At the south end of Kata Beach with direct beach access,
offering 273 rooms and suites with deluxe resort amenities. Deluxe
rooms have direct, partial or side sea views, Superior rooms are facing
the garden, the beach road, or hotel car park.
Katathani Phuket Beach Resort
(From 75 USD) Right on Kata Noi Beach, this deluxe beachfront hotel and
spa will offer you high class accommodation, nice pools, a good
restaurant, and a beach that you won't share with many other guests.
Food and Restaurants
There is so much to choose from, that it's really difficult to give any
recommendation. Maybe you want to try out places, where we like to have
our dinner from time to time:
Thai food: Thai Kitchen, Kwong Seafood, both Kata Center
Mexican: Bluefin Tavern, Kata Center
Japanese: ZEN Restaurant, Patong Beach Road and Central Festival Shopping Mall
Oishi, Hachiban, both Central Festival Shopping Mall
Italian: La Gondola, Kata Center
Cappanina, in the food alley close to Kata Beach Resort. Try the "Blue Cheese and Speck" Pizza!
International: Restaurant "On The
Rock" at Marina Phuket Resort. As the name says, you are sitting right
over the rocks at the south end of Karon Beach enjoying one of the best
views you can imagine for your lunch or dinner. See the webcam overlooking the
beach. You should definitely try their BBQ with
mixed meat or seafood, which actually is something between BBQ and
hot plate. Very delicious!

Dahab is an easy going place on the Gulf of Aqaba about 100km north of Sharm el Sheik, Egypt, South Sinai. The Lonely Planet travel guide about Egypt describes it with the words "Dahab is the wannabe Koh Samui of the Middle East". You'll find cheap accommodation as well as resorts with any facility you might want to have during your vacation. There are lots of restaurants right on the waterfront from where you can watch the moon rising over Saudi Arabia while you are having your dinner. During the day you can just hang out on the waterfront, do some excellent snorkelling, horse riding, camel safaris and so on. Local travel agencies offer trips to Mount Sinai, St. Katherine's Monastery and even to Petra in Jordan.
As a diving destination Dahab offers world class diving almost in front of your hotel or resort. We'll have some dive site descriptions coming soon in our diving section.
Klck on the image to the left to see some pictures of Dahab in our gallery!

Nirvana Hotel and Dive Center
Nirvana originally describes the state of being free from both suffering and the cycle of rebirth. Other resources say its an ideal condition of rest, harmony, stability, or joy. If you are on holiday, this might be exactly what you are looking for. When you stay at Nirvana Dive Center in Dahab you will soon feel reminded of the Nirvana itself, as you won't want to search any further for accomodation, good diving, excellent service and very nice people. Not to mention the restaurant, which serves the best indian food you ever had.
Anil, the american/indian owner, created an atmosphere with a truly indian touch. Besides diving pictures you will also find indian paintings and Hindu signs on the walls and over the doors, which makes this place unique in Dahab. Besides, the people working at Nirvana will not only offer you their very friendly service, but make you feel at home. As for the diving you will be taken care of by professionals who know how to make your dive trip unforgettable in an easy going way. You will wonder why you ever went out diving with bigger dive shops and in big groups before.

Naama Bay in Sharm el Sheikh Sharm el Sheikh, also known as "Sharm", is one of the major dive destinations in the Red Sea, if not even in the world. As I spent as much time as I could on the boat I can't say much about Sharm itself, but there is no doubt that this is a typical holiday resort with lots of hotels, bars, restaurants, tourist shops an the like. It's probably safe to say that it is not a place for people who want to get away from it all. However, as a diving destination Sharm is an excellent base to explore world famous dive sites like the Straits of Tiran and Ras Mohammed, as well as the Dunraven and the Thistlegorm wrecks. Something of interest might be the water and air temperature. If the air is too hot in summer or the water too cold in spring will pretty much depend on what you are used to. For myself the water temperature in summer is just alright, while I try to avoid the sun wherever I can at that time. In spring I really had to get used to the water temperature of 22-23°C, and although there were sunny skies, the wind can easily make me freeze once I get out of the water, and getting back into the (wet) wetsuit for the second dive was a bit of a challenge. Up to 380 boats operating from Sharm el Sheikh If you are planning to go there it might be a good idea to do some research about how many other tourists or divers you would have to expect in a given season. There are something like 380 (!) boats in Sharm, a number that includes all dive boats, snorkelling boats and glassbottom boats. In summer you might find up to 15 dive boats on a single dive site, so be prepared. See more pictures in the Egypt gallery |

What would you expect from a dive trip to the Maldives in low season? A lot of rain, low visibility, strong winds and waves? Well, it can be very different, as we could see on our recent dive trip. Two Mantas on the first dive raised our expectations, and we were not disappointed. |
